When we arrived, we headed straight for the little presentation that was going on at the armory. (Mostly we just followed the crowds of people.) First off, I have to admit that I honestly had no clue who John Brown was. Or what he did. And even after we listened to these guys who were dressed up in their fantastic Civil War costumes explain the story to us... um I still don't really understand. Apparently he was an abolitionist... but he was a bad guy? Still pretty confused. It doesn't help that history is certainly not my best subject. I mean I still LOVE it all, but it goes right over my head.
Okay, this next picture looks kind of bland, but let me tell you what it is. We are standing on the tip of West Virginia where the Shenandoah River (on the right) joins the Potomac river (on the left). The land on the left (across the river) is Maryland and on the right is Virginia. So, three states in one shot! There ya go.
And here we all are.

Jeff knew about Harper's Ferry because he took the scouts on a (gulp) 50-mile hike along the original Appalachian Trail. Apparently it cuts right through Harper's Ferry, specifically along the path to this church. I LOVED this little church - it was the perfect centerpiece for the whole village. I just have no idea how the people climbed those killer stairs to get to church! Especially the old ladies.

Krista, what a great post! Now I totally want to learn more about Harper's Ferry (I HAVE heard of it) and John Brown (and why we sing a song about his body "moldering" in the grave). You are so fortunate to be living in the area that you are - oh the places you go and the things you can learn! And yes, you ARE a *REAL* family! Love you all. Thanks for sharing.
That place is MAGICAL! I love it there! We got lost and ended up there once!!!! Its amazing.
isn't harpers ferry the best? when i was in yw (as a youth :o) we rafted the shenandoah and went through harpers ferry. now every time we go there, i want to raft it again with the boys. wanna come???
I love Harper's Ferry! It's such a cute little town. :) Glad you had a great time!
Loved the post, so fun! I have to put here that Sterling amazes me. He glanced over while I was reading this and saw the picture of them at the armory and I told him it was Harper's Ferry and this was the armory and he's like 'oh, is that the place that John Brown raided?' yeah, I had never heard of him either. And he was actually a good guy. He wanted to abolish slavery and went and killed a lot of people. So, good intentions, but wrong execution of those intentions. Anyways, did you know that?!! Now you know....
