The past maybe 36 hours have been one long continuous tantrum, interrupted intermittently by sugar-coated Jekyll/Hyde-complex sweet-tempered moments. (I'm talking about Kate, by the way.) Seriously, when she's not screaming and hysterical, she acts like she doesn't remember a thing and everything is peachy! Well, apart from the duration of church, which Kate tolerated surprisingly well, thankfully, the rest of the day was something of a nightmare. By the time we finally put her down for her nap, (in the office since Brooklyn was sleeping in their room), I was completely frazzled. Travis asked me what was wrong and I just told him with tears brimming over how MAD I was at Kate! She was just being so naughty! I was about to elaborate when we were interrupted by a bloodcurdling scream. Travis went to check it out and found that Kate had found some scissors and cut off her baby's hair. Mind you, this was right after I had taken away a DIFFERENT pair of scissors because she was trying to cut the tags off all the dolls. Somehow she found another, gave her Baby a trim, and as soon as she realized what she'd done, erupted into hysterics. Travis whisked her off and tried to console her while I stared at the cropped-haired doll on the floor. Well. Better the doll than herself, right? And what better way for Kate to get what she had coming to her? Plus I think this is a better look for Baby anyway. (She once had the misfortune of some genius (me) putting her in the dryer, and her strange little tuft of hair was kind of frizzled and scary-looking ever after.) It was just the crowning glory to that very moment. And I am canonizing it because later it will be insanely hilarious.
Apart from Kate's mutiny, the rest of the day was fine. Travis made up for Kate's tyranny. In the morning he made waffles for breakfast, with homemade strawberry syrup! (Thanks, Shepherds, for taking Travis in while he was out in your neighborhood AND teaching him to cook awesome things like that!!!) Then he also cooked dinner for me that evening, and gave me a massage. And I made strawberry shortcake, and that brings us to an update on the camera situation.
I mentioned our camera breaking, right? Well maybe I didn't mention that the NEXT DAY Brooklyn learned to walk!!! AAAHHH what a time to be without a camera! (We are still shopping.) I tried to take videos of Brooklyn walking with our video camera, but it was difficult to catch her actually going anywhere, and I'm not sure I know how to put that video on the computer, but I will try. Stay tuned.
Anyway, last night as we were eating our strawberry shortcake, I was wishing I could take a picture of it (I have this thing where I like to take pictures of the food I make. You may have noticed.) and I looked down at our indisposed camera with its partially-attached lens and thought maybe I could play around with it. I discovered that by balancing the lens at just the right angle and holding the shutter open with one finger, like so, I could actually take a picture!!!
I was pretty proud of the determined little camera, still taking pictures even post-mortem.
So here is the strawberry shortcake.
So here is the strawberry shortcake.
And the President of the Anti-Mother's-Day Association herself...
Right after I took the picture of the camera (I was trying to help you see it in all its misery), the lens flew off and a spring bounced out of the camera with a BOING! Like a cartoon!!! It was pretty funny. The camera is definitely done.

Krista-
We love you guys and think your girls are such cutie-pies! However, while we are in the midst of working on Meagher2.0 I think I will have to avoid your blog!? Kate tantrums make me rethink this whole 'baby' thing!?
BTW...isn't it about time for our annual get together?
:)

Oh tantrums!!! WOW- I'm so sorry that the last few days have been one rough ones. And that totally stinks about your camera!! At least you can feel good about getting a new one now- knowing you used your old one as long as you possibly could! Can't wait to hear what you get and hopefully SOON!! Yeah for Brooklyn walking!! Gotta get that documented!
Ps. Your strawberry shortcake looks heavenly! We opted for the easier solution on angel food cake with cut up strawberries on top! But I guess when you CAN cook- you ought to do it! :) Way to go!
It helps to know that other people have those kinds of days too. It almost makes it more bearable when it's happening to me. Almost.
Good luck, Julie :)
I have had mothers days like that!! My worst was the morning that Timothy asked me, "Mom, when are you going to open your presents?" and Dale started blankly at him, "What do you mean? What presents?" He looked at me, and I said, "Honey. It's Mother's Day." He said, "OH." And then didn't do anything to make up for it. He just figured he'd forgotten and there was nothing he could do about it. He took a nap while I steamed. Luckily, he was just OFF that year, and he is usually much better!
Oh hun, sorry you have been having a rough time. That stinks that your special day was so stressful. It's funny that the day that Mom's should be celebrated sometimes you just want to run away from the people that have made you a mom. Maybe you need to tell Travis to let you have a Saturday off or something. I've noticed that even a small break can make a world of difference. Hang in there, and don't forget to lock yourself in the closet and breath. :)
Sorry Kate decided to make Mother's Day so fun for you! I have had to lock myself in the closet for long amounts of time in the past but now I have discovered something that has really helped...So, have you heard of 1,2,3 Magic? It works! Karen Rich recommended it to me for Jake and it really does work...I have it if you want it?
That is stinking funny. To you it will be funny down the road from now but right now, to me, it's funny. My favorite is what you wrote above Kate's picture and Kate's half smile/whiny face. I love it. We're coming up this weekend!! Maybe Hunter can put her back in her place. :)
I think my kids are members of the Anti-Mother's Day Association, too. Your cake looks yummy, and I am sorry for the loss of your camera. At least you get a new one! :)
Sorry, but that last comment/picture about kate made LAUGH! Im so sorry! You poor thing! I swear they know when theyre SUPPOSED to be good and they do the opposite. I just had REALLY SUPER FREAKIN LOW EXPECTATIONS. Really LOW as in spending the day ALONE.
I hope this week is better. Shes probably just getting the LAST of her terrible twos out. She is almost three!!!
How crafty of you to try and use your camera after it was already dead! That strawberry shortcake looks YUMMY! And I feel your pain - Tyler goes through tantrum phases. Hopefully Kate goes back to normal SOON!!
Dude! Ava is JUST LIKE THAT. except, it's all the time. I think part of it is because she has decided not to take naps anymore and she still totally needs one.
Krista, I LOVE your blog. You're so honest and interesting and funny. i love that!
