Um... excuse you?
I just had to stop and share an experience from today since I have a minute while my kids are sleeping. Today my friend Shauna and I took our kids to the mall. (Maybe she will blog about this too! Her version will probably be funnier.) So there we are, walking up to the mall with our pair of ginormous double strollers loaded up with all four kids. We approach the row of four single doors that you have to pull open with all your might, and the dilemma here is obvious. So I hefted a door open and was holding it, trying to maneuver my stroller out of the way with one hand, and Shauna wrangled her way around me and through the door. Enter the yuppie. This guy approaches, cell phone to his ear, and I'm thinking, "Whew! What a gentleman, coming to help us when he could just go in another door and on his way." Nope. He was not there to help. Rather than (a) hold the door for us and our four kids, or (b) at least use one of the THREE OTHER UNOCCUPIED DOORS, he rolled his eyes and impatiently waited for Shauna to struggle through the door with her kids. He then MADE ME HOLD THE DOOR FOR HIM TOO (double stroller in my other hand) while he waltzed right in. What the crap??? Shauna & I didn't even wait for him to clear the second set of doors before bursting out laughing with "Are you freaking kidding me???" (I just hope he heard!) I'm sorry, but what??? I've been pretty impressed for the most part with the etiquette of people around here (road rage is not really that bad... I'm probably the most dangerous driver out there) but some of them are complete ignoramuses. Anyone else have a similar experience?

12 sweet nothings:
(raises hand) Pick me pick me!
Experience #1:When I had foot surgery I was going to Montgomery College and was on crutches. It seems like everytime I tried to get through the door, holding the door with one crutch or my good foot while trying to hop through and not close the door on myself, someone ALWAYS pushed past me and let me hold the door for them.
Experience #2: My cousin (yes my cousin) and her family came out to visit when I was about 18 or 19 and she was 21 months. We went to Arlington cemetery with them and we were on the shuttle bus going to the actual cemetery part. There were no seats left and I was holding my cousin and trying to hold onto the rail (which I am too short for anyway), and there were four college age boys sitting right there staring at me like I was retarted. Yet NONE of them offered me a seat.
Anyhow, I could go on, but my comment is too long as is. I just wanted to let you know I feel your pain.
Yah some guy was coming IN while i was trying to get out and he practically tripped over my stroller trying to get through the door faster than me and just let the door slam on me and my stroller. He was working in the PEDIACTRIC CLINIC TOO. yah. Hes supposed to be USED to people with strollers and such! RIIIGHT?
oh and sorry! Im glad you had someone there to at least laugh about it with.
Ugh, sorry about that! I've found out that people here really avoid strollers. Ignore them as if ignoring them will not give them a kid.
Er...this is not coming out right. I'm exhausted so I will not try again later. ;)
Oh, I'm sorry! I don't have an experience like it to share. I think people in the south are nicer, maybe?
That's insane!! Yes, I've had similar experiences but my head hurts too much to think of them right now. Glad you could at least have a good laugh today!
This is an experience that makes we wish we had a horn to honk like we have in our cars. He deserved a long honk for that behavior!!
I've actually caught myself doing something similar before, and felt extremely sheepish afterwards. Hopefully he eventually realizes his mistake. Why is it we always go first for the door being used? Laziness. Here's to all the lazy ignoramuses!
I don't think I have had something that bad happen to me since we've lived up in MD. You just live in a rough area my friend :) You should consider moving...to NC.
What a STINK!! I'm glad that you laughed. I hope he did hear you! I have had guys walk right past me, but never through the door I'm holding. Oh, except for the three guys and one lady that walked through the the mall door that TRENTON was holding open for ME one day. Yeah that really made me ticked off. I wish that I had more guts to make bigger stink when people act inconsiderate like that. Oh well.
All I can remember about being back east with kids was the constant staring in public. They stared when my kids made "bad" noise (heaven forbid they do so in public!) and even when they made "happy noise." They glared at us in restaurants and even at church (gasp! that one ALWAYS got me fired up most ... Mormons are SUPPOSED to be a little more understanding).
That's the one thing I LOVE about here. Everyone is SO much cooler about kids.
Em pushed a stroller into some guy at Sea World. He actually teasingly scolded me for scolding her about it! He said, "That's what kids do." It was one of those aha moments. I NEVER had anyone give understanding looks or phrases like that in MD.
I'm with Doreen ... you just have to move! HA! You will be doing so soon (next year or so) anyway, won't you???
Something like this happened to Sterling the other day. He and a fellow officer (at the traffic office) were waiting to get up to an ATM at the bank. There was 1, repeat, 1 other car in the whole lot and it was at the ATM. They're waiting a ways away at the sign you're suppose to wait at, and as the car drives away, they get ready to pull up to the ATM and another car comes flying around them and pulls up instead. Their jaws both dropped and they both just sat there for about 30 seconds. I told him he should have gone and knocked on her window because he was in uniform. It made me mad just hearing about it. I'm glad you can laugh though.
