This is my new toaster/toaster oven.
That's right - it is a combination toaster AND toaster oven all in one. The toast goes in the top, the oven part broils, bakes, heats, or cooks to perfection, and of course, it's RED! I love it.
However, there is a sad note to this story. There comes a time in every marriage when the Wedding Gift Toaster has toasted its last. Our marriage has officially reached this momentous milestone. It was the demise of this first toaster that necessitated the purchase of our new appliance. And so it is with hope for the future and a tear for the memory of our beloved toaster that we embark on this new chapter of our lives.
But I won't stop there. I have done a little research, and it seems that our story is not unique. In fact, among a group of my friends, all of us were married within a 2-year time period of each other, and all of us have recently had our toasters go on the fritz. I put together a statistics report and concluded that the average lifespan of the Wedding Gift Toaster is 4.2 years. Why toasters are not designed to last longer than 4.2 years we may never know. So. For those of you who are in Phase II (The Post-Wedding-Gift-Toaster Phase) or later of your marriage, tell me how long before your Wedding Gift Toaster flung its last slice of crisped bread and gave up the ghost.
(For those who are still in Phase I, how much longer do you expect your toaster to last?
For those who have been married longer than 4.2 years and still have the original Toaster, where did you register? Who gave it to you, and what is the make and model?)
Remember these questions are for research purposes and may possibly help future young newlyweds in their toaster endeavors.

Oh! This is classic!!
Unfortunately, I don't fit into the stats. For the first 10 years of our marriage, we used my beloved 70's-yellow toaster from my childhood. (yes, it was really form the 70s!!) The handle had broken off years before, but it still toasted to perfection. They really don't make 'em like they used to. They only thing wrong with the toaster (and the reason why my mom and I both ended up ditching it) was the color. We have had toaster #2 for a couple of years. It's pretty, but not quite the same. :)
Hmm... we still have our original toaster (married 5 years in December). I believe Marks older brother gave it to us as a wedding present and it is a nice white colored, Black & Decker Toast it all toaster. Knowing Marks brother, he bought it at K-Mart. It also has a switch that you can use to toast bagels. I thought it died on us 4 or 5 months ago because one side was toasting while the other was not. Mark finally figured that the switch to the bagel side on (we never eat bagels) and so fixed the problem. So far so good - I think it still has a nice long life ahead. I will guess another 3 or 4 years. I will let you know when it dies! :)
Oh my gosh! That is the funniest post I have seen all day!
Two months ago our wedding toaster gave up the ghost. It lasted 8 1/2 years. Last week I tossed the wedding waffle iron. This summer I dug up the last of my wedding dish cloths. There aren't any left. I need another wedding reception!
Mine and Todd's wedding toaster gave up the ghost at 3.6 years. What's up with that? Why are we less than the statistic? Did we get a super cheap-o toaster, or do we toast more than the average married couple?
So far we love our new toaster, except for the bagel setting, which burns the bagels. Go figure.
Holy cow... I am so behind on checking blogs! First off, super cute pictures of your super cute girls. I am so impressed at your sewing skills - Kate's outfit is adorable! Second off - WAY TO GO on your triathlon! That is seriously awesome, girl! I am so proud of you. And third off, we're comin up on our 4 year anniversary... hopefully our toaster won't die!
Ours is still alive, but is probably going to die within the next year. Ours is a Black & Decker as well and has the bagel option. It's not working as well as it did before, hooray for Wedding Gift Toasters.
LOVE your toaster oven!! We never got a toaster for our wedding. I had one before Spencer and I got married, but once we got our toaster oven for a wedding gift, I unfortunately got rid of my toaster. There are times that I wish I still had it though. I don't like that I have to flip my bread half way through to make sure it's toasted on both sides. Do you not have that problem??
Anie - I will show you next time you are here. The top has a traditional toaster - so you put the bread in and it works the same as a regular toaster (or better, in the case of our last one!) It has a switch so you can switch between "toaster" and "oven" functions. It is extremely cool. Oops this is Krista and not Travis (too lazy to sign out).
Our toaster is still going strong and it's been almost 3 years now. We bought it ourselves at Mervyns on sale (of course) right before we got married. It definitely doesn't LOOK expensive at all and it wasn't so I'm hoping that it'll still last me a long time. We'll see when it dies.
RIP to your old toaster.
I'm no help here ... can't remember if our toaster was a wedding gift or something we picked up. But we did have a toaster oven and we LOVED it. It bit the dust and we haven't replaced it. Yours looks tempting though!
Krista, my mom and dad got a toaster for a wedding gift in 1956. It is still alive and well and living now at your Aunt Karla's house. So that's 52 years old and will really throw off your average - sorry! Dad and I didn't get a toaster for a wedding gift (there's a new one for you), but I think we still have the one dad had in college; so it's approximately 35 years old. (If so, it's in storage.)
WHAT? Are you kidding? Wow they really DON'T make things like they used to!
Krista!!! How are ya? I'm so glad to see you on Natalie's blog! How are ya??? We need to keep in touch!!!
Ok, the 52 yr old toaster story is amazing!! And we still are on toaster one, so that would make it 9 years old. I am waiting for it to die because I have a cool looking bagle/toaster still in the package from our wedding. We still have a few presents we haven't put to good use yet. Like the cool williams sonoma mixing bowls I found under our bed one day in Kentucky and wondered why on earth I hadn't been using them all these years!
