Wendi & I successfully completed our first triathlon on Saturday. Yes we both finished and no the EMS did not have to scrape me off the sidewalk! WOO-HOOOOO!!!
Before the race... We arrived bright and early at 7 a.m... Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania was about a 1.5 hr. drive, so we were up at 5! My poor kiddos and especially my poor husband and sis-in-law had a lovely time hanging out at the YMCA for another 3 hrs. before our 10:00 start time! Yikes!
Obviously it was a little early for Kate...
First we swam... (500m)Then we biked... (16 miles...? I don't know. Wendi does your bike know how far it really was?)
Then we ran... (a merciful mere 2 miles)
Pants... and no pants. Yep I had to strip them off halfway through because they were so waterlogged... I think each leg held an additional 10 lbs. of water. We were WET.Luckily Wendi finished well before I did, giving her plenty of time to take over babysitting duties! She's carrying a very hungry Brooklyn who was very patient through a nearly 2-hr. race!
Okay not really. Wendi's trophy was bigger (they gave her the wrong one at first) and mine was actually imaginary. Here's the *real* picture:WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! THAT'S MY GIRL!!! As soon as the buzzer went off at the beginning of her swim, I was screaming and cheering wildly like we always did in high school until I realized... I was the only one. My hoots were the only ones echoing through that mild-mannered pool area. I guess most people there were just there for... recreation purposes...?
After the race, we all trekked off to Gettysburg, and I have pictures of that too, but I've been sitting here for a while & I'm getting bored, so those will come later. Anyway. HOORAY WE DID IT!!!

Wow! Congrats!
Good Job!! Do you get to see Wendy very often then? I have yet to do a triathlon, but they do them all the time here, they usually do it at the Lake Las Vegas - and I have friends that train...maybe I should stop being lazy and actually try it. It is the running that really scares me though -- I HATE to run!
What an inspiration you are!! Great job!
Krista you ROCK! A triathlon! Way to go, you are now my inspiration!!
I love you blog, it put a smile on my face!
if i had known they were giving out tropheys... iD SOOOOOOO HAVE DONE THAT WITH YOU!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE CRAP! Im there next time! Oh and im proud of you! go KRista! Ane Wendi! YEAH! That gold cup ALMOST looks real!
So you never say what place Wendi took in order to win a trophy - and I am so not surprised that she did. Maybe, just maybe when I move out there you'll be able to convince me to do one with you. I'm mostly scared of the swimming part. Do they have a max amount of time you're allowed to take? What about a max number of breaks? Maybe someday I'll aspire to something like that.
You are amazing! Way to go, Krista and Wendi!!
AWESOME JOB KIRSTA (and Wendi)!!!!! You are AMAZING!!!! YOur trophy should have been that big!!!! I bet it feels SO GREAT to have it done- what an ACCOMPLISHMENT!!! SO when are you doing your next one?? :) I wish I knew how to swim- if I could swim like you do, I'd join you on your next race! I guess I probably need some practice biking long distances too! I don't even remember the last time I rode a bike. I just remember my bum hurting afterwards!!!!
I'm so impressed that you did that!! I always thought doing a triathalon would be such a great goal. Way to go!
Krista, that is so awesome. I just joined a masters swim team last week. We meet 3 days a week, so I've only been twice, but it feels good to swim again. (Well actually, it felt way hard, having not swam since high school - 8 years! And the workout was a crazy 3800 meters, but hey, I swam all 3800 - at my own interval :) So you inspire me, maybe I'll attempt a triathalon, but I kinda hate running, so maybe a biathalon would be better for me. Did you train a lot for the running/biking part?
Whoa I definitely haven't swum 3800 in a long long time. Nice work. Actually, sadly, my swim was kinda pathetic. Also I hate running probably more than anyone. But I did it every day and eventually it wasn't so bad. Biking, not so much, but next time I will definitely bike more. Let me know how it goes!
Wow Krista, seriously. After reading your blog I thought "Maybe someday..." but then I thought, "Doreen, don't you remember that you don't know how to swim and that if you ever WERE in a triathlon you would need Krista there to be your lifeguard (or flotation device)??" I like to pretend like I DO know how to swim though. Thank goodness for whomever taught me how to doggy paddle!
I wish I could've been there to cheer on my crewies. You guys rock!
Krista you are amazing! Congrats on your race! Can't wait to see you guys again soon so you can tell us all about it!
I'm so impressed!! I could NEVER do it. The swim would have killed me.
Is wendy living in DC now?! Wow! Congrats on the triathlon! That's awesome!
