My mommy left today.
She is right now on a plane flying across the Atlantic.
I left her at the airport and then climbed in my car with my three (count 'em... THREE) children and drove off like a deer in the headlights.
And maybe cried the whole way home.
And it was an extra long drive because I missed that darn exit that leads to the beltway, and if you miss it you get a lovely half-hour tour of northern Virginia before you can correct your course.
Anyway.
Later I was sitting on the couch feeding the baby, and I'm not gonna lie - I was having a hard time keeping my eyes open. I looked at the clock and it was 5:20.
Luckily my thoughtful mother did not leave us empty-handed. After cooking and cleaning and babysitting for us for two weeks, she also left us with some essentials, like a bottle of Dreft and a gallon of milk and a pizza and gumballs. {Because I very seriously love pizza.}
Travis went to bed early because he is [STILL] so sick. When I finally got up off the couch tonight, I meandered into the kitchen and it looked like this:
My girls' half-eaten pizza was still on the table with an occasional glass of orange-pineapple juice. The rest of the pizza was still sitting on the stove. On the floor were some paper towels in a pool of water. (Apparently someone only got partway through cleaning up a mess...) Normally I'm embarrassed for anyone to see my house in its everyday condition, but today I do not care. Let's play "Where's Waldo?" (below) with the following items:
1. Travis's Nyquil AND Dayquil
2. Napkins I bought and didn't put away
3. Gold flip-flops I love so much I went back to get a pair for my mom
4. The aforementioned gumballs
5. Flowers from Travis when we came home from the hospital (everybody: "Awwww...")
6. And more flowers from my mom which Kate & Brooklyn helped pick out
At the dinner table this evening, Kate was not eating. Instead she sat quietly with her head in her hands and after a few moments moaned softly, "I miss Mimi." It was so sweet. We all feel that way. My girls had so much (perhaps a little too much) fun with her.
And so this is the hardest part about having a baby - that point when all the visitors and HELP leave and you are left alone thinking, "What the crap did I get myself into?" and usually your hormones are dragging you around by the hair anyway.
Tomorrow I go back to what is known as Regular Life, but for now Troy has fallen asleep so this is my chance to follow suit. And in the morning, I begin

6 sweet nothings:
I feel your pain! I always cry on the trip home from the airport...and I ALWAYS miss that stink'n exit to the beltway:)
Hang in there, it gets easier. Lets plan a play date!!
oh girl, i am with you--and my older 2 are in school! how often do people cry when their mother-in-law leaves??? for sadness, i mean :o) yet i cried for the whole rest of the day... but we can DO this! and i believe jeremy is on the schedule to bring you PIZZA this week sometime??? we will chat.
don't forget, you are amazing and heavenly father wouldn't send you more than you can handle. he might send you just enough to S-T-R-E-T-C-H you :o) but you will be better and stronger for it. it's true!!! love you...
Hey now all your 'help' hasn't left, I'm right here. : ) I called and left a message on your guy's phone, but I'm not sure if you got it. I want to know if you guys want to come to dinner on Saturday. Sister Olsen called and said that is the only day you had open or we would have you over every night. :)
If you don't want to come over I can drop it off at your house, or you can send your family over and have a quiet house to yourself. What ever you want I am here for you.
Let's also set up some play dates for next week, we are wide open. I'm in need of my Krista fix. :) Give me a call, because we are definitely in the same boat. I promise it does get better. I even got out of the house TWICE this week with all three kids by myself. WHOA!!
Good luck with Day 1. And if it makes you feel any better, our kitchen has that high counter just like yours and it is ALWAYS filled with junk. It's totally our dumping ground/only place left to keep things out of Hazel's reach. It takes me 10 minutes just to clean IT off when we have company over. Your kitchen looks immaculate next to mine.
Wow, well you're a better woman than me! It took me almost three weeks to get something up on our blog about having Crew! :) I feel like I hardly have time to do much of anything productive every day. BUT we DO have newborns so people can't expect too much out of us right?
OK, then why did you sound so cheery on the phone today? I think your house looks fabulously normal. Your writing along is witty enough to entertain, you are so kind to come up with an I-spy game as an incentive for your readers. Now you have us completely hooked!
By the way, I really enjoy the picture of your baby naked in the drawer. It's very artistic!
