!!! WARNING !!!: I have just baked the world's ugliest cake. Prepare yourself for something truly horrifying. In my defense, the cake part of the birthday was the result of poor planning on my part. (Wait. Somehow that didn't come out sounding like much of a defense.) Basically I had been entertaining lofty ideas for months ahead of time of colorful, towering, delicious-looking First Birthday Cakes, but when it came right down to it, of course I found myself hastily slapping icing on this baby with T-minus 30 minutes to go before bedtime. This was especially embarrassing in the presence of Nancy, who is the world-renowned Birthday Cake Queen. She gracefully stepped in to save the day a bit by garnishing the Disaster with some live flowers.
Here is the chaos that ensued which we fondly called a birthday party.
THE BEST PART:
Whoa, that was a lot of chocolate cake...
She enjoyed reading the cards as much as the gifts!
She had plenty of help opening her presents...
I just love Brooklyn's enthusiasm! I hope she never stops being so excited to receive a gift!
Kate definitely wanted in on the action. She was front and center the whole time and even helped with the digging of the hands into the cake... The kid just loves birthdays. Thankfully, Bob and Nancy did not forget her and brought her a present as well as Brooklyn. I was so grateful that they thought of Kate too! (I did not... and only had presents for Brooklyn.) They each got cute little sundresses. Kate tried to wear hers to bed that night. Thank you, Grays!!!
Um... I forgot to take the standard pictures of (a) all the presents and (b) Brooklyn holding up one finger (which she will do if you ask how old she is!!!) Oops. Sorry.
(For a little walk down memory lane, to read about Brooklyn's BIRTH day, you can look here. Okay actually it's the whole month.)
Happy Birthday AGAIN to my sweet girl!!! Sorry I am so bad at chronicling the important milestones of your youth. I'm just leaving room for improvement in the future!

8 sweet nothings:
Happy birthday, Brooklyn! I can't believe it's been a year!!
How fun! I LOVE birthdays! Happy Birthday, little one! Oh, and I read your birth story that Travis wrote - it was hilarious! He is a great writer...oh, and I loved the part about you putting on make up. I think I might have to do that with #2 someday.
okay STOP IT. seriously, STOP IT! Your cake is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cute! what are you talking about! Happy Birthday Brooklyn! When are we going to take some 1 year pictures?? Bring her over here this week! WILL YA?
Are you okay? where were you today? Oh and I love the new blog look!
Happy Birthday Brooklyn!! I love the cake. She's just going to tear it apart anyway. Tyler had a train cake for his one year which I let a 9 year old help me decorate. It was not the coolest.
Last year we slept in your bed for Brooklyn's Birthday! Thanks for letting us stay with you. I think you are a very brave soul to have company, a new baby, and a birthday party for your husband. I liked the crumb topping all over the table from Travis's cake. Thanks for all the gear. We have tried it all out.
KRISTA!! You're not the only who gets behind on blogging ya know. You're a lot better than me though. I usually just give up for 3 weeks after I have so many pictures that I can't stand. Then, on the end of the 3rd week I decide, "Boy, Doreen, you are a slacker and you should really get to ALL of those pictures you've been putting off forever." I avoid my blog as much as possible and going to other's remind me of how much I need to do...ANYWAYS, I'm getting back into the swing of things and read up on all that you've been up to. Happy B-day to the Travster, and happy b-day to mini-Trav, Brooklyn. She is SOOOOOO cute, by the way. I'm sure I've told you that several times by now though. Hope all is well for you guys. When is that trip down to NC???????
HAHA! I love the cake (stop fishing for compliments, people like me can't even make a cake that looks that good) & the expressions on Brooklyn's face! I can't believe our babies have been around for a year.
