It's a problem we've had for some time now. It may be pointless to try to improve upon an apartment... that we're renting... but when I think about living here for an additional 2 years, it starts to look bleak and makes me whip out the paint roller...
So I finished painting the dining room (I had previously done only one wall, but then decided the color was too bland to stand alone, and plus the other wall looked terrible) and we replaced the sad little brass chandelier with a much cooler light we found at Lowe's. Unfortunately... after Travis spent all night installing it (he literally hung it 4 times, having forgotten something each time), we finally decided we didn't like it. So we packed it up again and the girls & I returned it the next day, in the rain, and bought a chandelier-style one that I wired & hung completely BY MYSELF!
Also, this project was mine... Now that I'm teaching a few of my piano lessons at home, I decided that the lack of light in our living room was a problem that finally needed fixing. We went shopping for a ceiling fan light, and no, I could not choose a nice-looking fan in the first place; I needed a Project. It's the Charlie Brown Christmas tree syndrome, I think. So we picked up this pitiful little number on clearance. Here is how it originally looked:The bright glaring brass was pretty obnoxious, but one can of spray paint later, voila! Total project cost: less than $30.
Oh yeah... I totally assembled, wired, and installed this one by myself too. Let me tell you, it was a beast.

I have been watching way too much HGTV, too! It's addicting. And I also love a good spray paint job. The fan looks awesome!
Um..wow! I can't believe you'd tackle a ceiling fan by yourself. You keep pulling tricks out of your hat!
Youre KILLING ME!!! Youre like Martha Stewart meets Norm Abram!!! I cant even picture YOU, a tiny little thing... hanging a FAN AND A LIGHT! Was Travis OKAY? I mean Brians ego would have looked like it was shoved in a blender and turned on PUREE! Youre amazing! I really HOPE you know that! I love the look of it all! So.... wanna come over and help me add a light to my fan???
Okay okay I'd better admit that Travis DID help me... for example, the chain on the dining room light... the enormous links had to be opened and closed with nothing but brute strength. I definitely let him do that part. And he helped with a few other things that I was about to rip my hair out over.
You are just amazing my friend! I love the new chandelier and I am totally jealous about the ceiling fan deal. We need one but don't want to fork out over 100 bucks. Great job!
Wow! Kudos! I like to leave those projects for my hubby. I like to think it makes him feel needed! :)
That is awesome! I am so proud of you. Not just for the clever idea to spray paint to get rid of the gold, but to install it too! Man, I don't know if I should tell Brad because then he'll expect me to do stuff like that. Maybe I could though, I've never tried. Good for you!
Do fans even COME with installation instructions?? I told Matt about this and he thought I was joking. That fan looks SO much better with a nice Krista-job done to it. (Btw...way to go COUGARS, huh? We finished our shirts just in time for that game)
Yeah they do! I think they just expect you to install it yourself. The chandelier instructions were just one page, and were pretty terrible. Good thing I'd practiced on the fan!
And we want to see your BYU shirts!!! Where are the pictures??
Pictures are coming...I need to catch up on our blog!
I can't believe you hung them by yourself!!! You are amazing. And I didn't know you could spray paint metal and get it to look that good. I should have kept the fan we left in Kentucky!
so what I'm wondering is what are your girls doing when you are working on house projects??? when I do stuff around the house, Kaley ends up clogging my toilets with half a roll of toilet paper and Emma pours herself juice ... any reader can guess how that turns out!
WOW! Impressive.
